A freestanding refrigerator is withdrawn on its castors in a matter of minutes. A refrigeration column is plumbed, panelled and secured into a run of cabinetry which was constructed around it. The distinction governs everything that follows.
The panel is not replaceable
A custom panel was manufactured for that unit, in that kitchen, in a finish which was current at the time. It cannot be reordered. A cabinetmaker may approximate it and the approximation will be visible against the doors on either side, in the light of that particular kitchen, for as long as the kitchen stands.
That is the reason a column is withdrawn slowly, on protection, with the panel released properly rather than levered. The hour at each end which appears on the estimate is that.
Dual refrigeration alters the diagnostics
Columns at this level frequently operate two independent sealed systems within one cabinet: one for the fresh food compartment, one for the freezer. It is the reason they hold humidity as they do. It also means one system may cease entirely while the other continues without interruption.
Consequently the first question is not what has failed but which system has, and that is established by measurement rather than by inference. Reaching the wrong conclusion on a freestanding unit costs a part. Reaching it on a column costs a day of labor as well, because access is the greater part of the work.
What we observe most
- The evaporator fan on the affected side. Cold is being produced and is not being distributed.
- A defrost drain frozen through. Inexpensive, and it recurs where the tube is thawed rather than cleared and reclipped correctly.
- The defrost heater or its thermostat. Ice closes the air path across a week or two, which is why these present gradually.
- Condensation within a panelled door. A hinge or a seal out of alignment following panel work. Corrected properly it ceases; left alone it corrodes the liner.
- A leak in one sealed system. Recovery, repair, evacuation and a weighed charge, all under EPA Section 608 certification.
Repair remains correct for longer here
A replacement column, plus the joinery to accommodate it, plus a panel which will not match, runs into a figure most households have not anticipated. The threshold at which we recommend replacement sits considerably further out on this equipment than on a freestanding machine, and we will show you both numbers.
