What “factory authorized” actually means, and what it does not

How long should each appliance actually last?

Every company in this trade describes itself as authorized, certified or approved by somebody. The terms are not interchangeable and only one of them means what people assume it means.

The three things people say

Factory authorized means the manufacturer has appointed the company to carry out warranty work on its behalf. There is a contract. There are audits. There is a procedure the company is required to follow, and there is a mechanism for removing the appointment if it does not.

Factory trained means somebody attended a course, possibly years ago, possibly one person out of eight. It is worth something and it is not the same thing.

Certified on its own means very little unless the certifying body is named. EPA Section 608 certification for refrigerant handling is real and legally required. A certificate from an unnamed institute is decoration.

Why it changes the work

An authorized servicer receives the manufacturer’s own diagnostic procedures, its service bulletins, and access to its parts distribution at trade terms. More usefully, it receives notice when a platform develops a known condition, which is how a technician arrives already knowing what a particular model does in its ninth year.

It also imposes obligations. Documentation on every job. Part numbers recorded. Procedure followed rather than improvised. That paperwork exists because a manufacturer is going to read it, and the customer benefits from it whether their machine is in warranty or not.

How to check

Phone the manufacturer, or use the service locator on its website, and ask whether the company is listed for your postcode. It takes four minutes and it settles the question. Any company that hesitates when you say you intend to check is telling you something.

Where it does not matter

On equipment well out of warranty, from a manufacturer with wide parts availability, a competent independent may serve you perfectly well and often for less. Authorisation matters most on equipment still covered, on built-in units, and on platforms where the diagnostic procedure is not obvious from the outside.
