Maytag washer showing an F5 error: what it means

An F5 stops the cycle before it starts, or partway through, and the drum stays locked. It reads like a serious fault. It is usually one component doing exactly what it was designed to do.

What the code means

F5, with its various sub-codes, is the machine reporting that it cannot confirm the door is locked. A front-loader will not add water until it has that confirmation, because the alternative is water on your floor. So it stops and tells you.

The usual causes, in the order we check them

• The lock assembly itself. A small motor drives a bolt, and a switch reports back. The switch is the part that wears out. This is the most common finding and it is an inexpensive fix.
• The strike or the hinge. A door that has dropped slightly on its hinge presents the strike at the wrong angle, so the bolt does not travel far enough to close the switch. Adjusting the hinge solves it and costs nothing but the time.
• The wiring harness. The loom to the door flexes every time the door opens. On a machine that has done ten years of daily loads, a broken conductor inside the insulation is a real possibility.
• The control board. Last on the list, not first. Boards do fail, but the three items above account for most F5s, and replacing a board without testing them is expensive guesswork.

Before you call

Unplug the machine for a full minute and plug it back in. That clears a code that was thrown by a one-off glitch and tells you whether the fault is persistent, which is genuinely useful information for whoever attends. Check the door closes with a definite click rather than resting shut. And take the model number off the sticker inside the door frame.

What not to do

Do not force the door on a machine that has stopped mid-cycle with water in the drum. The lock is holding a door with several gallons behind it. Drain the machine through the filter at the bottom front first, then deal with the lock.
