It is the single most common refrigerator call we take, and it worries people more than it should. A freezer holding temperature is proof the sealed system is working. Cold is being made. It is simply not arriving where you need it.
Where the cold actually comes from
On almost every modern refrigerator there is one evaporator coil, and it lives in the freezer. A fan blows air across it and pushes some of that air up through a duct into the fresh food compartment. Two things can interrupt that without touching the freezer at all: the fan can stop, or the duct can ice over.
The evaporator fan
Open the freezer and listen. On most models the fan runs whenever the compressor does, and holding the door switch in should keep it running. Silence, or a fan that grinds and stops, is a motor that has failed. It is an inexpensive part and an ordinary same-visit replacement.
The defrost circuit
If the fan runs but the fresh food side stays warm, the evaporator has probably iced solid. The coil frosts a little on every cycle by design, and a heater melts it off several times a day. When the heater, the bi-metal thermostat or the board that fires them fails, the frost simply accumulates until air can no longer pass through. The freezer stays cold because it is sitting next to a block of ice. The refrigerator gets nothing.
You can confirm this at home. Empty the appliance, switch it off at the wall and leave the doors open overnight. If it cools normally for a day or two afterwards and then drifts warm again, the defrost circuit is the fault. Each leg of that circuit is testable, which is why we measure rather than replace the whole assembly on a guess.
The things people try first, and why they rarely help
Turning the thermostat colder makes the compressor run longer, which on an iced evaporator produces more ice rather than more cold air. Clearing the vents inside the fresh food compartment helps only if they were genuinely blocked by food. Neither reaches the actual fault.
What it is worth
Both of these repairs cost a small fraction of a new refrigerator, and on a Whirlpool the parts are still supplied a long way back through the model range. This is not a fault that justifies replacing an appliance.
