Your oven died the day after a self-clean cycle. That is not a coincidence

We attend this call more than any other on wall ovens, and the sequence is always the same: the oven worked, somebody ran the cleaning cycle, and now it is dead or the door is locked shut.

What the cycle actually does

Self-clean heats the cavity far above any cooking temperature and holds it there for hours in order to reduce food residue to ash. Every component around that cavity has to survive it: the door lock motor, the wiring behind the panel, the thermal fuse and the control board. On a young oven they generally do. On one that is ten or fifteen years old, the margin has gone.

What usually fails

  • The thermal fuse. A one-shot device that opens permanently on overheat. It is inexpensive, and it did its job.
  • The control board. Heat-damaged relays or a cracked solder joint. More expensive, still far below the price of an oven, and on a built-in far below the price of the cabinetry work a replacement would need.
  • The door lock. The motor or its switch fails partway through, leaving the door latched. Forcing it breaks the latch and turns a small repair into a large one, so it is worth waiting.

Is it worth repairing?

On a wall oven, nearly always yes. A replacement has to fit an existing aperture and match the rest of the kitchen, which frequently means joinery as well as an appliance. A fuse or a board is a fraction of that.

What we suggest instead

Clean by hand where you can, and if you are going to run the cycle, run it while somebody is at home rather than overnight, and not the day before you need the oven. If your model offers a shorter or lower-temperature steam clean, use that: it is far gentler on everything around the cavity.
